Maggie Knight

Hello!

My name is Maggie Knight and I have the privilege of serving as your SSMU President for 2011-2012. Having finished off a Bachelor of Arts & Science in Environment and Economics in June, I’m now starting a second undergraduate degree. Originally from Victoria, BC, I’ve been involved with the SSMU since 2007-2008 (which, yes, makes me feel old sometimes).

This is going to be a big year for the SSMU, as we strengthen our democratic processes through greater accountability from your elected representatives and a more inclusive General Assembly; take action on proposed tuition hikes; implement the restructured Frosh/Orientation; provide greater financial transparency; and undertake new sustainability projects within the Shatner building. (This is just a snapshot—check out the rest of the executive’s welcome messages and keep checking back for updates!)

Within my portfolio, I’m particularly excited to host a series of strategic summits on the issues which matter most to students. I’m always impressed by the innovation that emerges from a group of students putting their heads together in a concerted problem-solving effort, and I hope you’ll be one of the students who comes out to give your input.

SSMU offers a huge range of services, activities, and support to McGill’s more than 21,000 downtown undergraduates and we hope we’ll enrich your year in one way or another. We encourage you to get in touch with your representative on SSMU Council, to come and listen or ask questions from the gallery during Council meetings, and to make your voice heard during each semester’s General Assembly.

I also welcome you to contact me directly at president@ssmu.mcgill.ca or 514-398-6801, or drop by the SSMU office—I can’t promise I won’t be in a meeting, but I’d love to see you face-to-face. We’re here for you, so don’t hesitate to bring us your ideas and concerns.

Good luck and we have an amazing year!

The president is the chief officer of the Society, and strives to ensure its long term integrity. One of the president’s principal responsibilities is to be the spokesperson of the Society in a manner that does not conflict with the policies set out by the Legislative Council,General Assemblies, and Referenda, while actively representing the interests of the Society’s members and coordinating relations with the university administration. Through chairing Executive Committee meetings, organizing Council agendas, maintaining relations with Faculty and School student associations, and representing the members of the Society to the University Senate and Board of Governors, the president plays a very active role defending the rights and privileges of every SSMU member.
