Exec Positions

The McGill Black Students’ Network has an executive team composed of eight different members that keep everything running smoothly. Elections generally take place in March of the preceding year (with the exception of the First-Year Liaison, who is chosen the following year.

1. Chief Coordinator – Shall ensure the smooth running of the Network as a whole through facilitation of and mediation with the various executive portfolios with a vision that is consistent with the BSN constitution and mandate. May chair or call executive meetings. May cast the deciding vote in the event of executive deadlock. Shall not be the chief spokesperson, chief representative.

2. Afro-Carib Coordinator(s) – Shall serve as the link between BSN, MASS and CSS and shall foster collaboration between the two groups. This includes notifying the BSN executive of · Shall coordinate collaborative events between BSN MASS and CSS. The main objective of the African Coordinator shall be to maintain, promote, and expand relations between BSN, MASS and CSS.

3. Communications External Coordinator(s) – Shall act as the chief representative of BSN to the community outside of the University. Shall be responsible for developing healthy relations with students and community organizations outside McGill, and particularly those in the Montreal area. This may include traveling to the offices of these organizations in order to gather information concerning their activities and studying the possibility of collaboration. Shall be responsible for organizing at least one collaborative project during the school year between the BSN and the outside community. Shall be responsible for promoting the image of BSN to the outside community.

4. Communications Internal Coordinator(s) – Shall act as the chief representative of BSN within the University community. Shall be responsible for communication within the executive meetings, with other McGill University student organizations, and with the Students’ Society of McGill University. Shall take minutes at executive and general meetings, and emailmembers and executives. Shall be responsible for booking and arranging meeting rooms, organizing and obtaining refreshments, and drafting agendas for general meetings.

5. Education Coordinator(s) – Shall plan children’s day. Shall coordinate the insertion of McGill students as instructors in tutoring programs at elementary and high schools with large Black student populations. Shall be the custodian of the BSN library as well as other educational records and equipment.

While these responsibilities may include organizing sessions, Black History Month presentations, and poetry readings, they require that the coordinator(s) organize a Children’s Day celebration which through interactive and entertaining activities, informs elementary and high school students about Black History.

6. Finance Coordinator(s) – Before the term, shall meet with SSMU VP Operations and the preceding BSN finance Coordinator with the aim of learning the regulations and procedures concerning the budget, revenue, expenditure, deposits, and withdrawals for the up coming year. Shall prepare a budget for the school year after receiving submissions from the exec meeting of the year’s planned events. To educate the coordinators and the constituency on the withdrawal and deposit procedures to be used for the term.

During the term, shall obtain funds for an event as per the accounting procedures when requested and approved in a meeting of the coordinators. This should be done promptly (maximum one week) and accurately (the right amount taken from the right account and given to the right person). Shall deposit any revenues or leftover funds from an event within 24 hours of the completion of the event. Shall provide financial updates at every general meeting. This shall include a full budget breakdown at the second general meeting of each semester. Shall be responsible for at least one major fundraising event.

After the term, the existing finance coordinator’s responsibility to meet with the new coordinator and explain the financial procedures an duties to the entering coordinator.

7. Political Coordinator(s) – Shall be the senior political strategist(s) and chief spokesperson(s) of the Network. Shall be responsible for the assertion, politicization, promulgation of political issues of concern and/or interest of Black peoples through the organizations of political events including but not be limited to panel discussions, conferences, roundtables, and taskforces. Shall coordinate (in collaboration with any other interested portfolios) the annual Black History Month Issue of McGill Daily. Shall organize the BSN end-of-year executive elections.

8. Social Coordinator(s) – Shall be responsible for the organization and the planning BSN social events. These events include but are not limited to parties, potlucks, soulfood fridays and outings (ie. movie nights).
