ABOUT SERVICES
There are 21 student-run services operated under the Students’ Society of McGill University: Black Students’ Network, DriveSafe, Elections SSMU, First Year Council, McGill Student Emergency Response Team, Nightline, WalkSafe, Midnight Kitchen, McGill International Students’ Network, Mature and Re-Entry Students Association, Organic Campus, Musicians’ Collective, Plate Club, Players’ Theatre, Savoy Society, Queer McGill, Sexual Assault Centre of McGill Students’ Society, Volunteer Bureau, The Flat Bike Collective, TVM: Student Television at McGill, and the Union for Gender Empowerment. For a complete list of Services run under SSMU (with descriptions and contact information), check out the “Service Listings“!
Services are different from clubs (or “interest groups”) because their mandate is to provide a service to all SSMU members (and PGSS members!). Two of these services (First Year Council and Elections SSMU) are mostly overseen by the SSMU President, but the rest work with the SSMU VP Clubs and Services. The SSMU VP Finance and Operations manages the accounting procedures for all services. Services are legally part of the SSMU, a relationship which represents a diversity of costs and benefits; for example, SSMU services are able to access all SSMU staff resources (including the backing of our full office full-time staff team — especially our accounting department — and the VP Clubs & Services), can levy a student fee, and have higher priority in room bookings approvals, but this also means Services must work with SSMU to follow SSMU accounting and insurance procedures.
