Over Winter Break, The McGill Debating Union send three teams and two judges to the World University Debating Championships in Berlin, Germany. Sarah Balakrishnan and Emma O’ Rourke-Friel made it to double half-octos, Howard Cohen reached the public speaking finals, and Bryce Balcom and Sean Stefanik broke as judges. A big congratulations to everyone for their accomplishments at the tournament!

On January 11th and January 12th, McGill held the second annual Coupe Laurier, a SUCDI tournament for French debaters. A big thank you to all club members that came out and helped make the tournament a great success! The Tournament Directors, Patricia Castle and Bailey Kay, deserve particular recognition for all the hard work they put into the weekend. The McGill team of David Rudin and Allison Render competed at the tournament. They broke second and ended up losing their semi-final on a very close 3-2 decision. David Rudin was also named the tournament’s top French as a Second Language speaker and third overall speaker!

This weekend, the Debating Union will be hosting Winter Carnival, an inter-varsity Canadian Parliamentary tournament attended by universities all across the country. Please consider coming out and volunteering some of your time over the weekend. The tournament promises to be a great time!
