SSMU has 3 full time Environment Commissioners, who also sit on McGill’s Senate Subcommittee on environment, oversees the Environment Committee. The SSMU Environment Committee coordinates between the Student society and the McGill students interested in building an environmentally sustainable campus, working with any and all environmental groups on campus.

Mandate: The Environment Commissioners facilitate dialogue between the community and SSMU on environmental matters. This includes taking-up the concerns of walk-in students, staff, and faculty. It also includes coalition-building between student environmentalist groups, and helping promote their work to the campus community. It further calls for the proactive creation of new spaces and opportunities for environmental activism to flour within and without SSMU.

What we do: The Environment Committee works with any and all environmental groups on campus such as Sustainable McGill Project, Gorilla Composting, S.T.O.P., Greening McGill, The Flat, Organic Campus, McGill Environment Students’ Society, Farmers Market at McGill, Environmental Residence Council, Campus Crops, The Plate Club and many more.

The Environment Committee is also currently working on implementation and integration into a Five Year Plan for Sustainability of the recommendations in the SSMU Sustainability Assessment 2008. We also continue to support groups and individuals in gaining access to funding through the Green Fund, the Generations Pact, and other external funding sources. We continue to work on making our website useful to the environmental community at McGill, including getting groups and projects set up with user accounts and project/group listings, centralizing environmental event listings on the events calendar, and building up a resource library. The Environment committee also creates a hub for representatives of different student societies and green groups to get together and give updates on projects as well as share advice and ideas.
