Sustainability

The SSMU supports many different clubs and services dedicated to making our institution sustainable and environmentally friendly. Sustainability is not all about environmental issues, among other things it is about equity, and SSMU has an active Equity Committee.

About Sustainability at SSMU

SSMU Environment Committee holds weekly meeting on Tuesdays at 5:30 pm (for fall 2012) in the boardroom of the SSMU Office (Shatner University Centre, 3480 McTavish, from the main entrance turn right and walk down the hallway to the SSMU banner). It’s a great spot to see what’s up with environmental actions in the student community, everyone’s welcome!

The SSMU has on staff a full-time Sustainability Coordinator as well as student Environment Commissioners, a Green Events Coordinator, and a Green Building Coordinator. We also employ other students to engage in research projects pertaining to current environmental issues.

Check out what the SSMU Sustainability Coordinator (currently David Gray-Donald, McGill BASc 2010), a full-time SSMU employee paid entirely with McGill students’ SSMU fees, is up to at (link to tinyurl.com/ssmusc). Should you ever want to talk to the Sustainability Coordinator or join in on some meetings that look interesting to you, please email David (the coordinator) at dgray-donald@ssmu.mcgill.ca with a brief message about what you’re interested in, and why you want to set up or join in on a meeting!

The Environment Commissioners can provide support to campus sustainability efforts in a number of ways, including taking up the concerns of walk-in students, staff, and faculty; coalition-building between student environmentalist groups, and helping promote their work to the campus community; and proactively creating new spaces and opportunities for sustainability activism to flourish within and without SSMU.

EnviroComm works with any and all environmental groups on campus including, but not limited to, Gorilla Composting, Sustainability Network, Greening McGill, The Flat, Organic Campus, McGill Environment Students’ Society, Farmers Market at McGill, Environmental Residence Council, Campus Crops, The Plate Club and many more.

If you have questions, concerns, or you want to get involved, please email the Environment Commissioners at environment@ssmu.mcgill.ca. You can also contact the Sustainability Coordinator at sustainability.coord@ssmu.mcgill.ca or dgray-donald@ssmu.mcgill.ca
